Lead Science Writer & Children’s Storyteller - Full-Time Contract (Remote | Los Angeles)
About Tappity:
A child's curiosity is endless. That’s why we created Tappity—a safe place for kids to explore every topic they love and discover new ones along the way! We have an ambitious goal to build the largest library of interactive and educational shows for kids on Earth--starting with science!
Inside Tappity today, you’ll find bite-sized episodes covering hundreds of kid-friendly science topics taught by entertainers (aka Tappity Tinkerers). But unlike with YouTube, kids can actually engage with Tappity episodes through polls and other interactions that actually change the outcome of a show! Using cutting edge technology, we’re inventing ways to make digital learning more immersive, fun, and engaging than any platform out there.
Although our team is small, we’ve been recognized by the press and families alike. Over 150,000 kids have played Tappity, and our lessons have been completed more than 35 million times. We’re currently the #1 science app for kids on the App Store, and we’ve been featured by the New York Times, Motherly, Apple, Common Sense Media, and national TV shows like Live with Kelly & Ryan.
Tappity is backed by investors including YCombinator, AltaIR, Brighter Capital, and founders from companies like Toca Boca and Mystery Science.
The Role:
We’re looking for a full-time writer for Tappity’s bite-sized science shows. In these one of a kind productions, kids get to interact with our live science hosts, and learn about the world (and universe) one lesson at a time. As the lead writer, you’ll be working closely with our production team and founders to research, develop, and write scripts for every episode, covering a comprehensive list of science topics and wonder-based phenomena. In addition to honing Tappity’s unique voice and style, you’ll be leading the effort to help us create the most engaging and kid-friendly science explanations for 100,000’s of kids.
Your responsibilities:
Research science concepts and pitch lesson ideas to the team for 8-10 minute episodes
Ensure science content is accurate and developmentally appropriate for our target audience (4-10)
Develop, write, and deliver production-ready scripts on a timely basis, including titles, summaries, and discussion questions for families
Collaborate closely with the production team to draft and edit scripts
Drive and lead weekly Writer’s Room meetings with the team
Work with the founders to plan and execute against our long-term content roadmap
Our production team is based in Los Angeles, so we prefer someone local in the area who can come to set up to 3x a week. This is a fun and unique opportunity where you get to contribute and collaborate with the talent & production team on set. However, we are open to exceptional remote candidates as long as work meetings can be conducted during Pacific Time business hours.
To start, this is a 40 hours/week contract role. If there’s a mutual fit, we’re looking to hire you as a full-time employee, which includes benefits and equity in Tappity.
Who we’re looking for:
You love telling stories and talking to kids - whether you were an educator, comedian, or a writer, you love thinking about different ways to engage with kids
You’ve written professionally and collaboratively - Ideally, you’ve had 5+ years of experience in screenwriting for children's entertainment (e.g. mobile games, tv programs) and/or science writing and comedy
You’re comfortable or thrive in fast-paced environments. As a startup, we’re constantly experimenting and we like to ship new features quickly. This often means we’ll have to adjust scripts on the fly, and while we’ll get better over time, the idea of rapid change doesn’t faze you.
You’re creative and maybe even a tinkerer! If you design fun crafts on your own time or have tested different ways to make the “Egg Drop” experiment even more fun for kids, this is the job for you. You’ll have free rein to design new activities.
You’re excited about creating educational content for kids! We’re building the world’s largest library for interactive videos with cutting-edge technology, and you’ll play a big role in helping Tappity achieve this goal.
You have a knack for explaining complex science topics to a broad audience! You’ll be providing guidance to the team so our science explanations are age-appropriate, interesting, and accessible. And if you’re a science buff yourself, with either practical or academic knowledge in the sciences, even better!
You enjoy research and learning! No matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn! So ideally you love diving into new topics and becoming an expert!
